The pallet price is only the beginning. Learn every cost that sits between you and a profit, with a worked example and a checklist you can reuse.
Online videos often show the pallet price and the "retail value" and stop there. Real resellers know the money is made or lost in everything between those two numbers. Here is the full picture.
1. The pallet price
The listed price of the lot. Easy to see, and usually not the only big cost.
2. Freight
Most pallets ship by LTL (less-than-truckload) freight. Price depends on:
- Weight and dimensions of the pallet.
- Freight class (based on density and type of goods).
- Distance between the warehouse and you.
- Delivery type — business with a dock is cheapest; residential is more.
- Accessorials — liftgate (needed if you have no dock or forklift), call-ahead, inside delivery, limited-access locations.
Freight can be a large share of the total, especially for a cheap pallet traveling a long distance. Always get a freight quote before you buy. Local pickup removes this cost entirely if you are within driving range — our warehouse is in Palatka, Florida.
3. Unloading and transport
Do you have a forklift or pallet jack? If not, a liftgate truck will lower the pallet to the ground, but you still need to move or break it down. For pickup, a pallet needs a suitable truck or trailer, ratchet straps and a way to load it.
4. Sales tax
Depending on your state and whether you hold a resale certificate, you may pay sales tax on the purchase. If you resell, you usually need to collect and remit sales tax on your sales. Check your state's department of revenue.
5. Selling fees
Every channel takes a cut: marketplace final value fees, payment processing, listing fees, booth rent at a flea market, or the cost of running your own store. Use your actual fee percentage in your math.
6. Shipping to your customers
If you sell online, outbound shipping and packing supplies add up quickly. Factor them in, or charge them correctly.
7. Time
Sorting, testing, cleaning, photographing, writing listings, answering messages and packing. If a pallet takes 30 hours of work and makes $300, you earned $10 an hour. That may be fine for you — but know it.
8. Disposal and unsold goods
Every pallet has some items that do not sell. Budget for donation runs, dumpster fees or a clearance bin.
A worked example
Suppose you buy a customer-returns pallet:
- Pallet price: $450
- Freight: $220
- Sales tax: $0 (resale certificate)
- Total landed cost: $670
You sort 80 items. 60 are sellable, average realistic sale price $28 = $1,680 gross.
- Marketplace and payment fees at 14%: $235
- Packaging and outbound shipping not paid by buyers: $90
- Disposal: $30
- Net after costs: $1,680 − $235 − $90 − $30 − $670 = $655
If that took 25 hours, you made about $26 per hour. Now you can compare pallets honestly.
Your reusable checklist
- Pallet price
- Freight quote (with or without liftgate)
- Tax
- Expected sellable percentage for this grade
- Realistic average sale price (from sold listings)
- Fees for your channel
- Outbound shipping and supplies
- Disposal
- Hours of work
Keep records
The IRS and SBA both recommend clear records for any small business. Keep every invoice, freight bill and fee statement. It makes taxes easier and shows you which categories actually earn money.

Frequently asked questions
Why is freight so expensive?
A pallet is heavy and bulky and moves by LTL (less-than-truckload) freight, priced by weight, freight class, distance and extra services like liftgate delivery.
How can I reduce freight cost?
Pick up locally if you can, ship to a business address with a loading dock, and avoid add-on services you do not need.
Do I pay income tax on pallet profits?
If you resell for profit, income is generally taxable. Keep receipts for pallets, freight and fees. Talk to a tax professional for your situation.
