A printable checklist covering business registration, address, phone, domain age, photos, policies, payment and reviews — so you can verify any seller in minutes.
Use this checklist every time you consider a new seller. A legitimate business will pass most of these points easily. A scam usually fails several at once.
Identity
- 1. Full street address shown, and it matches a real commercial building on a map.
- 2. Business registered in its state. Search the state registry (for Florida, Sunbiz at dos.fl.gov/sunbiz).
- 3. A phone number answered by a person during posted hours, who can answer specific questions.
- 4. The business name is consistent across the website, invoices, card statements and listings.
Website
- 5. Domain age: check lookup.icann.org. Does the creation date fit the "years in business" claim?
- 6. Google Safe Browsing shows no warnings for the domain.
- 7. Photos are original — reverse-image-search a few. No other company names or watermarks.
- 8. No copied text: search a distinctive sentence from the About page.
- 9. No fake "official partner" claims or misuse of retailer logos.
Policies
- 10. A written return policy with specific numbers (days, any fee, how to start).
- 11. Shipping, privacy and terms pages exist and name the same company.
- 12. Product listings state condition and whether lots are manifested.
Money
- 13. Card payment or a method with buyer protection is accepted.
- 14. No pressure to pay by wire, Zelle, Cash App, gift card or crypto.
Reputation
- 15. Search the name with "scam" and "complaint"; check BBB Scam Tracker. Look for real, varied reviews — or an honest "no reviews yet" — rather than perfect, identical praise.
Scoring
- 14–15 points: looks legitimate. Still pay with a card.
- 10–13: ask more questions and start small.
- Under 10: do not buy.
